For fans of Wild and Eat, Pray, Love, an entertaining story of a five-year, motorhome road trip taken by a woman and her dog.Have you ever felt suffocated by your routine and responsibilities, or just longed for some adventure? Heidi Eliason did, so at the age of 45 she quit her job, sold her house, bought a motorhome, and embarked on a five-year road trip with her dog, Rylie. It was a journey that transformed her life.Through the challenges of managing the Green Monster—her motorhome—traveling in Mexico, and getting derailed by Mr. Wrong, she learned—sometimes the hard way—that chasing the corporate ladder and storybook romance was not always a sure route to happiness. She struggled with insecurities, faced her fears, and dug her way out of depression. By taking a leap into the unknown, Heidi found a new community of friends, met wildlife, traveled the Baja Peninsula, discovered the magic of the sea, and experienced freedom like she had never known. At a time when the American Dream is uncertain for so many, more people are turning to alternative lifestyles such as the van life movement and fulltime RV travel. Confessions of a Middle-Aged Runaway may help others to find the courage to jump off the hamster wheel of the conventional Dream and make a transformative journey of their own.

The blurb in the description about this book was absolutely right on. It truly is kind of like “Wild.” I gave up reading “Confessions of a Middle-Aged Runaway” 3/4-way through, just as I gave up on “Wild.” Both are books written by brave women. However; both were so maddeningly predictable and felt annoyingly stale even though the premise appeared fresh at first glance. Even the cover of this book looks retro, or old. It’s actually a sign of what is lurking inside. It struck me soon after I started reading that I was gliding across shallow pages without opportunity to fall into any depths. But, this book was meant to be a quick read, I reasoned. Fair enough; I kept plowing forward. More signs presented themselves to warn me to get ready to take off my reading glasses.Heidi’s distrust of men surfaced early on. The married men she met at the camp sites claimed themselves to be separated, or some other permutation of the truth. When I read this, I knew where things were headed: But, OF COURSE there will be a cheating, married boyfriend and an absent, alcoholic father upon whom she can pin her dissatisfaction with life and distrust of men! These things have been present in books since time began! This is exactly why I found reading about these things in this book to be so tiring. After all, life and relationships are more complicated in these modern times. Don’t many of us have partners who were involved with, and possibly still married to, a previous partner when we met them? These partners might even be in our own homes. And her poor father—he gets much of the blame, although he sounds like a loving and good man. The author stated he gave up alcohol when she was relatively young. He made peace with himself. Unfortunately, Ms. Eliason is still there on the dock complaining, decades after the forgiveness boat paddled away. I found that the author’s carefully crafted ladder of bad men soon collapsed under its own weight. It didn’t hold up under circumstances of today—an era when infidelity or marriages to other people are not necessarily immediate deal breakers. Many families struggle with alcohol and substance abuse issues, as well. It may have felt good writing about it. Not so much reading about it. I wonder how the author’s father felt about the way she singled him out to blame? It seemed the author was in a bit of a rush to get the book written, and that bothered me. She must have used all the worn-out and trite excuses for her discontent that she could gather in oh, half a second of thought, or so. As a result, I felt disconnected from her thoughts and unsure whether I liked her or disliked her. I’m not even sure there was anything to connect to other than the fact that RVing, under the right circumstances, can be great fun. It was as if she opened the pages to her memory book for me, but flipped through them in fast forward speed, not allowing me to take my rightful place as the omniscient reader. She did not allow me the opportunity to really care about her, or her life journey.Heidi had a fun RV adventure, and that’s great. However, the overall timing of this book may be off. Today, folks are actually forced to take to their RVs and cars on RV adventures. The romanticism and self-reflection I used to associate with these types of adventures simply may not be realistic or true. The author certainly did not appear to be searching for a reflection of self, but for a confirmation of self-set mind traps. It simply got old. It felt as though the entire adventure was just one more thing the author had to do, like taking out the trash, emptying the tanks and checking tasks off the list. In other words, her formula seems to be: Do something trendy or commonly seen on bucket lists > Identify possible excuses for past feelings, thoughts, actions, inactions > Apply blame > Check thing off list > Rinse > Repeat. What happens when this tightly controlled author deviates from the lists? Sadly, I’ll never know.I’m disappointed I didn’t really get to know the author or what makes her tick. Perhaps she, herself, does not really know. Or, perhaps this is by design. Whatever the case, I’m happy the author at least made a change to address her unhappiness. She appears to have had at least a modicum of fun figuring it all out. Additionally, she gained something to write about, and much to her credit, she did just that. I guess that was the point? Not all books require weighty substance. Or so the author appears to have decided. This is the beauty of writing and selling books. Nothing is promised in a book. What readers experience as a result of reading the book is self-created. No promises, no refunds. The same concept applies to life.
